Refined haircare. Why professional products matter.

During the 30 years I have been in the hair industry, the most talked about topic is the debate between supermarket haircare vs professional. Clients ask ‘Is there a noticeable difference between the two?  ‘Aren’t we just paying for pretty packaging?  and so on.

As a hair professional I believe it is my job to provide the best possible advice, ensuring my clients have the knowledge and opportunity to purchase practical, affordable hair care solutions.

So what’s the difference?

The ingredients. It comes down to the basic notion that you get what you pay for. The cheaper the product, the cheaper the ingredients and the results speak for themselves. We are bombarded every day with the latest 'must have' products to suit every budget and it’s no wonder most people don't where to start, what to choose and end up baffled by clever marketing.

We are wise enough to know that manufacturers want our money and our repeat business so will do anything to catch our attention. One of my biggest frustrations are with adverts for ‘professional’ hair products that can be purchased outside of the salon space.  They claim to be 'professional, affordable' .   I can confidently state, they are NOT professional.

So what is?

Professional, quality hairdressing products are ONLY available from a salon or salon professional. Why? Well, you need to be a professional in order to sell a professional product! Us professionals have had the correct training, experience and key skill to identify client need and recommended accurately.  One size does not fit all!

Unprofessional products contain cheap detergents such as sulfates, parabens, silicone, sodium chloride and synthetic fragrances. These detergents do nothing for the health of your hair, instead the following issues have been known to occur.

·       Dry, brittle texture

·       Colour fade

·       Dull and lifeless appearance

·       Requires daily washing

·       Natural oils found in hair are removed

·       Scalp irritation

·       Changing brands regularly because the product has stopped working

Salon professional products contain key ingredients that are essential for maintaining the hairs health (ph balance), elasticity, strength, shine, manageability. Our hair is made up of protein (keratin) and moisture, this is all we need to focus on to achieve optimum hair health, nothing else.

When you consider there are daily factors such as heat styling, sun exposure and chemical services, our hair is expected to withstand a lot.

Always wear a hat in the sun and avoid colouring your hair?

I have spoken with multiple clients over the years that have avoided chemical services for worry over ruining their hair. This does not happen if hair is being fed all the nourishment it needs and is correctly looked after. Us hair professionals have been colouring our hair for years and often get compliments on how shiny and healthy it looks. Prioritising our haircare is the number one reason our hair looks and feels so incredible.

It’s too expensive though?

We absolutely understand that price is a driving factor for our clients and it is essential we get value for money.  Yes, professional products cost more. BUT they last longer as they are concentrated meaning only a small amount is required. Double, if not triple the average time of a cheaper product.

We have found on average that clients using professional shampoo get 6 weeks longevity vs nonprofessional products needing to be replaced fortnightly.
